A child was saved by an off-duty officer Wednesday afternoon.

According to Boston Police, an 11-year-old child was in a back yard in Dorchester just after 12 noon when he was attacked by a pit bull.

A preliminary investigation reveals that an off-duty officer heard screaming and hopped multiple fences to get to the boy and radio for help.

The officer discharged his firearm, but it is currently unclear if any bullets hit the dog or the boy.

Police say that another pit bull was being held nearby when the attack took place at Rockfield Terrace.

The boy is currently in surgery and suffered what were described as vicious injuries to his groin, neck, and arm.

There have been reportedly several calls for unleashed dogs at the home.

It is currently unclear what the relationship is to the boy and the residence where the attack took place.

Both dogs have been removed from the home by animal control and the investigation is ongoing.
