Off-duty Massachusetts police officer saves life of unresponsive 2-year-old child after near-drowning

Albany, NH – Officer Matthew Sech, while on vacation with his family in the White Mountains, jumped into action to save the life of a 2-year-old child after a near-drowning incident.

Around 11:00 a.m. on Friday, Officer Sech was at Iona Lake when he heard urgent screams from the shoreline. A woman had just pulled her unresponsive child from the water. Without hesitation, Officer Sech rushed to the scene and delivered several back blows to the child to expel water from her lungs. The child regained consciousness but remained lethargic.

Shortly after, the Carroll County Sheriff, along with Conway Fire and Paramedics, arrived and took over care. The child was transported to the hospital and has since been released, reportedly in good health.

Officer Sech has served with the Chelmsford Police Department for six years. In addition to his role as a First Responder, he recently completed Emergency Medical Technician training.
