Norwood Police and Fire respond to multi-vehicle crash with serious injuries

A serious motor vehicle crash involving a medflight resulted in multiple people seriously injured.

According to the Norwood Fire Department, this morning at 10:40 a.m.., HRECC began receiving multiple 911 calls reporting a motor vehicle accident near the intersection of Route 1 and University Ave.

Engine 6 and NA-5 were dispatched and while en route callers advised that people were trapped in the vehicles so Ladder 1 and NC-2 were added the assignment along with a Westwood Engine and Ambulance on a line box response.

Engine 6 arrived on scene 5 minutes later and reported 2 cars both with significant damage and with 2 patients heavily entrapped in separate vehicles and requested Medflight. A telephone pole was also down. NC-2 Captain Coven arrived on scene a short time later and took command, directing Norwood crews to work on 1 vehicle while Westwood handled the other.

While extrications were underway in addition to securing the scene of the accident, NC-2 and Norwood Police were also able to secure and clear a landing zone for Medflight in an empty parking lot adjacent to the accident. After about 20 minutes, both extrications were complete, and the Norwood Ambulance transferred their patient to the waiting helicopter. Westwood would transport their patient by ground a short time later.

Both patients were transported to Boston hospitals in serious condition.

The crash is under investigation.
