New Bedford woman killed in pedestrian collision in Westport remembered as kind soul who enjoyed making people laugh

A New Bedford woman has been identified as the victim in Monday’s pedestrian collision.

At approximately 10:15 p.m., Troopers and the Westport Fire Department responded to Route 195 East for a confirmed vehicle versus a pedestrian in the area of mile marker 15.7.

According to Massachusetts State Police, the preliminary investigation reveals a 2010 Ford Fusion was eastbound on Route 195, in Westport. Simultaneously and in the breakdown lane, a woman believed to have exited a different, as of yet unknown vehicle and started walking eastbound in the right travel lane of Route 195. The Ford then struck the pedestrian in the right travel lane.

The operator and passenger of the Ford remained on scene and were uninjured.

The pedestrian was determined to be deceased on scene and has been identified as 51-year-old Sherry Henderson by Massachusetts State Police.

Those who knew Henderson described her as a sweet and kind soul who enjoyed making people laugh.

A GoFundMe fundraiser has been organized by the family for funeral expenses.

The unknown vehicle Henderson was in prior to the crash was being operated by an as-yet unknown person who left the scene after the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.
