Mobile police substation, free ShotSpotter, cameras coming to Fall River

In response to increased crime and citizen requests, Mayor Correia announced the addition of a Fall River police mobile substation starting today. The substation will be moved to various hot spots throughout the city to combat crime in particular high crime areas or when incidents arise that warrants its use.

The mayor also announced that through negotiations, the ShotSpotter hardware will be utilized for free by the Fall River police department. The company will be working to correct the issues Fall River has had with the technology and the city will be utilized as a test market. The mayor wants to utilize some of the funds spent on ShotSpotter to purchase and operate mobile cameras in the city for public safety.

Lastly, the Fall River Housing Authority has received a $250,000 grant which will be used for hardware and cameras. They will be installed for the public safety of the citizens living in public housing, according to the announcement.

Minus the grant which is for purchases only, the changes would be sustainable over the long term and would not be dependent on grant money, according to Correia.

The initiatives are a combined effort of former Chief Racine, interim Chief Dupere, Mayor Correia, Fall River Housing Authority, and several other members of the administration.
