MassDOT to hold virtual hearing as they reveal proposed Fall River Corridor Improvements on Route 79/Davol Street
A Live Virtual Design Public Hearing will be hosted by MassDOT to present the design for the proposed Corridor Improvements on Route 79 and Davol Street in Fall River.
The purpose of the hearing is to provide the public with the opportunity to become fully acquainted with proposed Corridor Improvements on Route 79/Davol Street Design Build project. All views and comments submitted in response to the hearing will be reviewed and considered to the maximum extent possible, according to MassDOT.
MassDOT states that “the proposed project includes both design and construction of the Route 79/Davol Street corridor. The existing Route 79 is being relocated approximately onto the current alignments of northbound and southbound Davol Street, which will allow creation of development parcels along the existing Route 79 alignment. The work also includes, but is not limited to, the design and construction of local street connections to the corridor, including Brightman Street, President Avenue, Hathaway Street, and Turner Street. The project also includes the design and construction of a network of shared use paths and sidewalks, and new traffic signals. The project also requires the design and construction of a new bridge structure and retaining walls, as well as a new drainage system.”
According to MassDOT, a secure right-of-way is necessary for this project and acquisitions in fee and permanent or temporary easements may be required. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts is responsible for acquiring all needed rights in private or public lands and the land acquisition policy will be presented in the hearing.

The traffic lights at Pocasset and 195 create backups and unessassary delays everyday. There is simply too much traffic in this area. Adding more traffic lights further north will only make it much worse. There is simply too much traffic. Rt.79 is heavily traveled, especially on Firday afternoons. Keep two unrestricted free flowing lanes of travel in both directions. Anything less will be disaterous!

Oh boo hoo. traffic delays in a tiny area! Cue the tiny violins!
What Fall river did in the 60s/70s was destroy itself by destroying it’s waterfront with highways. There was an immeasurable amount of damage done to the city by turning everything over the the Holy Temple of the Automobile. When you turn over the best parts of your cities to the car, people won’t want to live there anymore.
Fall River did this over and over, like stepping on rakes again and again.
Thing is, rt 79 between the Rt 6 bridge and 195 was not seeing as much traffic since the new Veterans Memorial Bridge went in. if you’re coming down 24 and want to do to Providence, just pop off on rt 6 and grab 195 by the swansea mall. if you’re coming down 24 and need to go to new bedford, they didn’t go on 79 anyway. All the times i was on Rt 79 down near the battleship it’s been a nearly deserted road and no need to dedicate that many miles just to the testament of wretched excess of maintaining a superhighway
Goo riddance! Now if they do something about rt 195 bisecting the city and daylight the waterfalls, Fall River might just have a chance to have a personality again!
