MassDOT issues South Coast Rail work update and its impacts
Here is an update on work taking place and the impacts courtesy of MassDOT.
Assonet: Detour for Grade Crossings and Track Work at Forge Road and Richmond Road
Location of work: Railroad grade crossings at Forge Road and Richmond Road in Assonet
Dates/Hours of Work: •Full road closure/detour remains in place at Forge Road (north of Richmond Road) and is expected to continue to after Thanksgiving holiday •Single lane closures from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM at Richmond Road also continue • Road closure/detour at Forge Road (south of Richmond Road) expected after Thanksgiving holiday •All Regular work hours 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM
During detours, all through traffic will be routed to Richmond Road and Locust Street in Assonet. Police details will allow local traffic access only on Forge Road.
Fall River: 24-Hours/Day Bridge and Track Work December 1-12
MBTA’s contractor will be working up to 24-hours a day during a 12-day track outage coordinated with the freight rail operator to facilitate the removal of existing track infrastructure and the installation of new bridges, ballast, rail ties, rail and other project infrastructure without interruption due to active freight traffic.
Location of work: Farm Road railroad bridge reconstruction and culvert work in the railroad right-of-way behind Point West Drive/Horizon Way in Fall River
Access to the railroad right-of-way for this work will be through Point West Drive and Horizon Way. There will be no street parking on Horizon Way and parts of Point West Drive to allow access for large trucks, materials and equipment. Signs will be posted.
Dates/Hours of Work: 24-hours/day Wednesday, December 1 to Sunday, December 12
Location of work: •Railroad right-of-way track work between Terry Lane and New Street in Fall River •Collins Street railroad bridge replacement in Fall River •Ashley’s Underpass railroad bridge replacement just north of Weaver’s Cove Layover Facility site in Fall River
For this work, Collins Street in Fall River will continue to be closed to all vehicular and pedestrian traffic. All through traffic will be routed to Clark Street.

Taunton: 24-Hours/Day Work
Location of work: Track work in railroad right-of-way behind Mozzone Boulevard in Taunton
Dates/Hours of Work: 24-hours/day Friday, December 3 to Sunday, December 5
Residents along Debra Drive may notice activity at the East Taunton station site.
Daytime Work on Middleborough Secondary and New Bedford Main Line
Location of work: •New Middleborough Station site, 161 South Main Street, Middleborough •East Taunton Station site, 1141 County Street, Taunton •Wamsutta Layover Facility site, 217 Herman Melville Boulevard, New Bedford •Church Street Station site, 387 Church Street, New Bedford •Middleborough Secondary and New Bedford Main Line right-of-way
Dates/Hours of Work: •Monday, November 22 through Wednesday, November 24, 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM •Monday, November 29 through Friday, December 3, 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM
Construction is ongoing at station and layover sites and along the railroad right-of-way from Middleborough to New Bedford.
Daytime Work on Fall River Secondary Line
Location of work: •Adams Lane, Berkley •Richmond Road to Forge Road, Assonet •Freetown Station site, 161 South Main Street, Assonet •Collins Street, Fall River •Weaver’s Cove Layover Facility, 2680 North Main Street, Fall River •Fall River Depot site, 825 Davol Street, Fall River •Fall River Secondary Line railroad right-of-way
Dates/Hours of Work: •Monday, November 29 through Friday, December 3, 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM
Construction is ongoing at station and layover sites and along the railroad right-of-way from Berkley to Fall River.
Berkley: Railroad Access at Cotley Street
Location of work: Cotley Street in Berkley
Dates/Hours of Work: Please note that the contractor will be using Cotley Street to access the ROW for various work activities, this is primarily used during the daytime (7:00 AM-7:00 PM) but will also be used 24-hours/day during some activities.
Overnight Transportation of Soils to Middleborough, East Taunton, Weaver’s Cove Sites
Please note that soils excavated from the railroad right-of-way during the above work may be transported overnight by truck to designated project sites in Middleborough, Taunton and Fall River where the soils will be stockpiled and spread.
Activity at the Weaver’s Cove Layover Facility site should be expected during the 24-hour work December 1-12.

Dates/Hours of Work: Overnight as necessary, 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM
MassDOT: Weaver Street Bridge Closed for Demolition and Reconstruction Operations
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is announced the closing of the Weaver Street Bridge located over the railroad in Fall River. The closure began November 10, and is anticipated to continue through 2023. The closure is necessary to allow crews to safely and effectively demolish and reconstruct the bridge.
