Massachusetts teen in a coma, on ventilator, after serious car crash as family deals with house fire
A Massachusetts family has had a difficult 2023 to say the least.
According to friends and family, Aidan McElhinney, a recent graduate of Winchester High School, was in a terrible car crash early Wednesday morning, December 20th in Winchester.
Family members say that neighbors who called 911 saw ice on the road and that no drinking or drugs were involved.
After the crash, McElhinney was admitted in the Surgical ICU at a Level 1 Trauma Center with substantial and life-threatening injuries. He is in a coma and on a ventilator.
As of this weekend, family members say that McElhinney has undergone a handful of surgeries due to injuries to his brain, lungs, and abdomen. Surgeons removed his spleen and 1/2 of a lung and addressed a number of other emergent issues. Most of his internal organs suffered some degree of damage, including his heart, liver, and kidneys.
Despite the difficult circumstances, the family has been grateful for the community support and treatment from medical professionals.
“We can’t say enough about the stellar medical care and devotion Aidan has received. So many people who have worked with Aidan are keeping tabs on him and stop by to see him and us. Thank you all for keeping Aidan, his family, and friends in your thoughts and prayers. It’s incredibly meaningful to us and we are very grateful.”
According to a GoFundMe fundraiser that has raised over $60,000 as of this writing, the McElhinney family also lost use of their home in April due to a house fire.
Hopefully, 2024 will bring better days for the McElhinney family.
