A Massachusetts State Trooper who nearly lost his life in a crash, returned to visit those who saved that life.

According to State Police, on August 25th, around one in the morning, Trooper Matthew McRae of the State Police Belchertown Barracks and one other passenger were in a serious motor vehicle crash in Salt Lake City, Utah, while on vacation.

McRae was a passenger in a ride-share at the time of the crash.

McRae, another passenger, and the operator of the ride-share were all transported to the hospital with severe injuries. The crash left McRae in critical condition in the ICU, with several broken bones including a broken neck and spinal injury.

The operator who struck the ride-share vehicle was placed into custody on “suspicion of DUI”.

According to the State Police Association of Massachusetts, earlier this week, McRae embarked on a heartfelt return to Utah to personally thank the heroes who played a crucial role in saving his life after the near-fatal crash. His journey included stops at the Salt Lake City Police Department, the Utah Highway Patrol, and the University of Utah’s Intensive Care Unit. During his visit, Trooper McRae had the honor of meeting with fellow law enforcement including Lt. Hawks of the Utah Highway Patrol, the dedicated team at the University of Utah ICU, and Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall.

Trooper McRae expressed his profound gratitude for their swift and selfless actions that ensured his survival. As a gesture of his profound appreciation, he presented them with Runaways, symbolizing his heartfelt thanks.
