Massachusetts State Trooper in critical condition after driver charged in crash
A Massachusetts State Trooper is fighting for his life after a crash that took place late last week.
According to State Police, on August 25th, around one in the morning, Trooper Matthew McRae of the State Police Belchertown Barracks and one other passenger were in a serious motor vehicle crash in Salt Lake City, Utah, while on vacation.
McRae was a passenger in a ride-share at the time of the crash.
McRae, another passenger, and the operator of the ride-share were all transported to the hospital with severe injuries. The crash left McRae in critical condition in the ICU, with several broken bones including a broken neck and spinal injury.
According to a GoFundMe fundraiser, McRae has been a State Trooper in Massachusetts for four years and previously was a local police officer for three years.
McRae was described as a man who “dedicated his life to serving and protecting the people of the Commonwealth. For those who know Matthew, we can agree that he is a generous and fun-loving person. He has helped so many people within his personal and professional life, now it is time to help him.”
The operator who struck the ride-share vehicle was placed into custody on “suspicion of DUI”.
