A suspect and police officer have both been shot after an exchange of gunfire in Massachusetts.

According to Dave Procopio of Massachusetts State Police, at approximately 8:40 p.m. Saturday, local agencies requested assistance from the Massachusetts State Police after officers exchanged gunfire with a suspect at a residence on Old Carraige Drive in Wilbraham. A Wilbraham Police Officer was struck by gunfire and has been transported to an area hospital.

Shortly after midnight Sunday, Troopers with the State Police Special Tactical Operations (STOP) Team made entry into the residence on Old Carriage Drive and took the barricaded male suspect into custody.

During the course of the incident, Troopers from the MSP Crisis Negotiation Unit had established an open phone line into the house.

MSP STOP Team Troopers made the apprehension after first deploying the unit’s Bearcat armored vehicle, with its battering ram extended, to break a large ground-level window on the front of the home. A Trooper with the MSP Drone Unit then piloted an unmanned aerial vehicle through the broken window and into the home, sending a video feed of the interior back to incident command. The video feed revealed the suspect inside a front breezeway with gunshot injuries.

STOP Team Troopers issued commands to the suspect, who was conscious, to not move, then made entry into the home and placed him into custody. STOP Team Troopers recovered a handgun and ammunition that was next to the man.

Tactical Medics from UMass Memorial Hospital, who deploy to MSP STOP call outs, immediately treated the suspect on scene. The suspect was then transported to an area hospital under police guard.

Prior to the sequence of events that led to the arrest, MSP STOP Team members rescued two occupants of the home who had escaped onto the roof of the house’s adjoined garage.

The Wilbraham Officer who was shot remains at an area hospital and was not named.

The suspect’s name has yet to be released.
