Massachusetts State Police, local police, investigating death of 2-year-old girl
Police are investigating the death of a young child.
According to Dave Procopio of Massachusetts State Police, at approximately 10:00 a.m., Winthrop Fire and Police responded to a Pleasant Street home upon receiving a report of a female toddler in need of immediate emergency medical aid. The two-year-old girl was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston in life-threatening condition.
At approximately 10:30 a.m., Troopers from the State Police Detective Unit for Suffolk County and State Police Crime Scene Services Section responded to assist in the investigation.
MSP detectives who responded to MGH were notified that the child was pronounced deceased at the hospital at approximately 11:19 a.m. after life-saving measures were unsuccessful.
Preliminary investigation and observations found no signs of apparent trauma to the victim and no evidence suggesting foul play. Preliminary investigation suggests that the child had an illness in recent days and was at home with her mother, who called 911 to report an apparent medical emergency involving the child at approximately 10:00 a.m.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will conduct a post-mortem assessment of the victim in order to determine the cause and manner of her death. This child death investigation remains open pending that determination by the OCME.
