Massachusetts State Police investigating after ice through windshield causes potentially serious injuries

Troopers from State Police-Concord are currently investigating an incident in which ice is believed to have dislodged from a commercial truck and smashed through the windshield of a pickup truck on Route 3 north, south of Exit 26, in Burlington. The incident occurred at approximately 11:30 a.m. The pickup was occupied by an adult male and female and two juveniles. The driver of the pickup suffered serious injuries and has been transported to Massachusetts General Hospital. Other occupants of the pickup were also transported to MGH with suspected minor injuries.

The pickup occupied by the victims in this incident is a 2019 Dodge 1500. The driver, a 40-year-old Newton man, was transported by ambulance to MGH with potentially serious injuries. The front seat passenger, a 38-year-old Newton woman, was also transported to MGH with minor injuries. The two juveniles in the pickup were a 3-year-old boy and a 1 ½-year-old girl. The boy was transported to MGH with minor injuries. The female toddler was not injured but was also transported for precautionary reasons.

According to a preliminary investigation by Trooper John Ciszek, the pickup was traveling northbound on Route 3 in Burlington when a large piece or pieces of ice flew off the roof of a box truck that was traveling ahead of the pickup. The ice smashed through the windshield on the driver’s side, causing the injuries. The pickup came to a stop; the box truck continued to travel north on Route 3. The pickup was towed by Winn Street Services of Burlington.

With assistance from a witness who followed the box truck, Trooper Ciszek located and stopped the box truck in Chelmsford. The truck is owned by a moving company, Diggins & Rose Moving Systems of Hudson, N.H., an agent of United Van Lines. The operator of the moving truck was 55-year-old man from Litchfield, N.H. The operator was cooperative and stated that he was unaware of the presence ice on the roof of the truck. The operated was issued warnings for having an unsecured load and impeded operation.

The vehicle from which the ice allegedly came is believed to be a moving truck with a New Hampshire registration. A Trooper stopped the suspected truck several minutes after the incident.
