Massachusetts State Police arrest man they say was responsible in fatal crash

Massachusetts State Police have arrested the driver of the Toyota RAV4 that rolled over into a flooded gully, causing the death of his passenger, along Route 95 yesterday.

According to Dave Procopio of the Massachusetts State Police, Troopers took the operator, Arkeem Samuel, 28, into custody shortly before 8 p.m. last night at his residence in Brighton after obtaining a warrant for his arrest from Dedham District Court.

Samuel is charged with Felony motor vehicle homicide while operating under the influence and operating negligently, Operating under the influence of liquor, Negligent operation of a motor vehicle and Marked lanes violation.

Samuel was booked at the State Police-Framingham Barracks and is being held in lieu of $50,000 cash bail. He will be arraigned tomorrow at Dedham District Court.

Evidence indicates that Samuel consumed alcohol before driving and that he was intoxicated at the time of the crash. He was treated at a hospital and released on Saturday.

The early morning crash Saturday claimed the life of passenger Liam Fitzgerald, 27, of West Roxbury.

The crash occurred in the infield adjacent to the University Avenue exit in Westwood near the Dedham line. The investigation is being conducted by Troopers from the Troop H Detective Unit, the State Police Detective Unit for Norfolk County, the State Police-Foxborough Barracks, the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section. The case will be prosecuted by the Office of Norfolk County District Attorney Michael Morrissey.
