Massachusetts public schools see record 910 virus cases this week

COVID-19 among Massachusetts schools increased for a third straight week which resulted in a record amount of cases along with decreases and increases in some area communities.

According to the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, a total of 682 new COVID-19 cases were reported among K-12 students from March 18 to March 24. 228 were reported for staff making the overall total in Massachusetts schools for the past week at 910.

The last report, which was for March 11 to March 17, revealed that 669 tested positive. 476 of the positives were students and 193 were staff.

The report only includes positive cases of students and staff who have been in school for either in-person or hybrid learning. Remote learning cases are not counted.

Here are the statistics from some area cities and towns from March 18 to March 24.

Acushnet: 1 student
Attleboro: 7 students and 1 staff
Dartmouth: No cases
Fairhaven: 4 students and 2 staff
Fall River: 10 student and 5 staff
New Bedford: 3 students and 7 staff
Plymouth: 2 students
Seekonk: 1 staff
Somerset: No cases
Swansea: 4 students
Taunton: 4 students
Westport: 1 student

New Bedford ranked 4th in the state in staff cases.
