A Massachusetts postal worker is being deemed a hero for actions he took recently.

According to police, on Friday, at 11:17 a.m., Salem Police Department officers responded to the area of Palmer Street on a report of a young child walking alone. Officers found a 3-year-old male, clothed in a long-sleeved shirt, sweatpants, and only socks on his feet. An employee of the U.S. Postal Service found him wandering the area, kept him safe, and called police.

Medical care was dispatched to the scene and the child was transported to the North Shore Medical Center for an evaluation as a precaution.

While on scene, officers were approached by staff from the Salem Community Childcare Inc., located at 90 Congress Street. Staff related they were looking for a child that had been in their care. The investigation showed this was the same child, and that he had opened the door to the daycare at 10:43 a.m. and walked outside.

The child’s parents were notified, and a report was made by officers to the Department of Children and Families, who will work in conjunction with the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care on this matter.

The Salem Police Department continues to investigate this incident.
