Massachusetts Police, Fire, and EMS Departments rescued a man attempting to commit suicide on Saturday.

According to Bourne Police Sergeant Economides, just after 7:30 p.m., Bourne Police responded to the Sagamore Bridge to check on the well-being of a pedestrian.

Upon arrival, officers made contact with a 57-year-old man who was threatening to jump off the bridge.

A Bourne Police officer was first on scene and was able to build a rapport with the man and keep him safe until the police had time to shut down all traffic on the Sagamore bridge. The officer continued with his best efforts to mitigate the situation and keep the man from harming himself.

At one point, the man abruptly made a sudden attempt to jump, and the officer put himself in harm’s way to apprehend the man, who was just inches away from going over the side.

He was transported to an area hospital for further evaluation.

Bourne Police were assisted by Bourne Fire & Rescue, Massachusetts State Police, Sandwich Police and Sandwich Fire & Rescue.

This was the last in a string of suicide attempts in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Most of them successful.

A man died after jumping off of a bridge in Massachusetts Friday night.

Last week, a Massachusetts State Police Trooper consoled a distraught man after successfully talking him out of committing suicide.

Three other bridge jumps have taken place recently in Fall River and Newport.
