A man wanted in the death of his 5-month-old daughter has been captured by police.

According to Sunderland, MA Police, on Friday at approximately 11:40 a.m., Chief Demetropoulos was dispatched to a noise complaint at 248 Amherst Road, the Cliffside Apartments.

After investigating the complaint, the Chief was alerted by State Police Dispatch out of the Shelburne Barracks that the individual he was questioning, 20-year-old Christian Alonzo of Texico, New Mexico, had a warrant out of New Mexico from 2021 which allowed for full extradition.

Leverett Police Department Officer Belanger was requested to assist the Chief in locating the individual, as he was no longer in the apartment complex. During their search, Officer Belanger was informed that the man had been at the Sunderland Market parking lot looking for someone to give him a ride to McDonald’s in Hadley. Chief Demetropoulos contacted Hadley Police Department and confirmed with Hadley Police Sgt. Romano on the possible location of Alonzo. Hadley PD Sgt. Romano, Officer Robitaille and Sunderland PD Chief Demetropoulos traveled to the McDonald’s in Hadley where the Chief located Alonzo in the restaurant.

Alonzo was arrested as a Fugitive from Justice and further detained under the New Mexico warrant which listed his offenses as Abuse of a Child (1st Degree Felony) & Tampering with Evidence (3rd Degree Felony) which resulted in the death of an infant. Alonzo was booked at the Sunderland Police Department and transported to the Greenfield District Court to await extradition.

According to Eastern New Mexico News, Alonzo appeared emotionless during police interviews concerning his 5-month-old daughter’s death and that an autopsy report revealed the cause of death as homicide by manner of blunt force trauma. The findings stated that the infant had numerous fractures consistent with child abuse.
