WILMINGTON – District Attorney Marian Ryan and Wilmington Police Chief Joe Desmond have confirmed the ongoing investigation into a fatal crash that occurred Wednesday night on Route 62 in Wilmington.

The preliminary investigation suggests that at approximately 9:00 p.m., a Lexus RX 330 was traveling westbound, and a Jeep Grand Cherokee was traveling eastbound when the Lexus crossed over the line into the opposite lane. The Lexus then struck the Jeep at a high rate of speed head-on.

The operator and sole occupant of the Lexus, identified as 41-year-old Erica Mastropietro, was transported to Lahey Hospital in Burlington where she was later pronounced dead. The operator and sole occupant of the Jeep was also transported to Lahey Hospital where she remains hospitalized.

According to a GoFundMe fundraiser, “Erica was an amazing, kindhearted woman, as well as a wonderful mother, stepmother, daughter, and coworker. She had the best personality, happiest soul, and warmest heart. She taught Mia (her daughter) so much while carrying her through the hardest and happiest of times. Mia talks so highly of her and always will, saying she was her best friend and knew her better than anyone.”

This crash is being investigated by the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, the Wilmington Police Department and the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section of the Massachusetts State Police.
