Massachusetts high school basketball coach dies after accident Friday afternoon

Chief Michael Ricciardelli reports that the Saugus Police and Fire Departments responded Friday evening after a man was trapped by a piece of heavy machinery.

At approximately 5:20 p.m., officers were dispatched to 31 Woodland Avenue for a report of a Bobcat machine that had overturned and trapped the operator, Mark Bertrand, 57, of Saugus. He was working on his private property at the time.

Upon arrival, Saugus firefighters worked to extricate Bertrand and began CPR. He was transported by ambulance to Melrose-Wakefield Hospital with life-threatening injuries. He later died from his injuries.

Saugus Police officers assisted with traffic at the scene.

Mark “Bird” Bertrand coached the Saugus High School Basketball team and had also coached children’s baseball.

The cause of the incident is under investigation by the Saugus Police Department.
