Massachusetts firefighter suffers line-of-duty death due to occupational cancer

A Massachusetts firefighter who served our country in multiple capacities has died.

According to multiple reports Boston firefighter from Engine Company 10, Matthew Troy has passed away.

Troy, a Marine Veteran, was diagnosed with stage 4 liver cancer at the age of 30 in 2022 after being appointed to the department on February 14, 2018.

Those who knew Troy stated that he “epitomized what it means to be a Boston Firefighter. The courage and determination he displayed in the performance of his duties was outmatched only by his spirit in his fight against cancer.” The Boston Fire Cancer foundation described him as “a kind soul who took care of his people.”

The community had come together to organize several fundraisers to help Troy in his fight that he sadly lost this morning.

District 8 Vice President of the Professional Fire Fighters of Massachusetts and Fall River firefighter Jason Burns has been an advocate nationwide for eliminating toxic PFAS chemicals from firefighters’ personal protective equipment that can cause cancer and has been featured in the documentary “BURNED: Protecting Our Protectors” to bring light to the subject.
