Massachusetts State Police are investigating a pedestrian crash on the Massachusetts Turnpike in Millbury that has resulted in the death of a young woman.

Preliminary investigation by Troopers from State Police-Charlton indicates that at approximately 11 p.m. a 2013 Nissan Altima was in a single-car crash on the eastbound side of the Turnpike (Route 90) in Millbury, at the 95.6 mile marker.

Investigation indicates that the lone occupant of the Altima, a 27-year-old Douglas woman, exited her car. The young woman attempted to cross the highway on foot and was struck by a car traveling westbound.

Responding Troopers located the victim in the westbound side in the vicinity of the median. She was transported by ambulance to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Worcester, where she was pronounced deceased.

Meanwhile, several minutes after the crash was reported, the operator of a westbound 2013 Ford Fusion stopped in the area of Exit 10A and reported to State Police that he may have struck something on the Turnpike a short time earlier. Troopers observed front-end damage to the Fusion, and the driver, a 54-year-old Oxford man, and his passenger, an adult female, were transported to State Police-Millbury and interviewed by Troopers.

Troopers also have located and interviewed witnesses to the crash.

The State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section has initiated a reconstruction of the crash; the State Police Crime Scene Services Section documented the crash scene and the vehicles.

The facts and circumstances of the incident remain under investigation by Troop C of the Massachusetts State Police with assistance of the crash reconstruction and crime scene sections and the State Police Detective Unit for Worcester County. No charges have been sought as of this point in the ongoing investigation.

The westbound side of the Turnpike was shut down prior to the crash scene to facilitate the rescue response and investigation. All westbound lanes were reopened at approximately 1 a.m.
