Longest active serving Massachusetts State Trooper passes away

The State Police Association of Massachusetts has announced the passing of the longest serving active Trooper in the Commonwealth.

47-year veteran Trooper Robert H. Whittier of the 59th RTT passed away on Friday morning after a valiant battle with cancer.

Earlier this month, Trooper Whittier was presented with badge #1 to commemorate becoming the senior Trooper in Massachusetts.

Trooper Whittier was known for several accomplishments including working the Boston Marathon for many years.

Gage Whittier, Robert’s brother, gave some insight into the man he was and his accomplishments in a social media post.

“He had a great deal of knowledge which he shared with fellow troopers and other law enforcement agencies. He escorted presidents from Jimmy Carter to President Biden, heads of state and foreign diplomats. He knew almost every street and person in Boston. He was strong for me when my wife battled cancer for two years at MGH. He visited her every night while she was in hospice at MGH. He has always been a loving and protective brother to me. We would go to the 99 in Saugus every week for dinner and he was strong for me after my wife passed away. I am so sad that I can’t call him for advice and hear his strong and brave voice!”
