A Wareham man who was arrested in Fall River on intent to murder charges, has been indicted.

Friday a Plymouth County Grand Jury returned indictments against Mondel Johnson, 40, of Wareham on two counts of Armed Assault with Intent to Murder, Arson of a Dwelling, two counts of Assault and Battery by Means of a Dangerous Weapon, and Malicious Damage to Property. Johnson will be arraigned on the charges in Brockton Superior Court at a later date.

As a result of an investigation, Mondel Johnson, age 40 of 18 Barker Road East Wareham, was arrested in Fall River on April 5. The arrest was made by Wareham Police detectives, troopers from the Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Fire Marshal’s office and the Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section, as well as officers from the Fall River and New Bedford Police.

During the course of the investigation into the cause of the fire, detectives determined that Johnson had attacked a female inside the home at 36 Restful Lane in East Wareham, doused her with a fluid, and set the home on fire. The victim was able to escape and run to a nearby residence for assistance. The victim was treated and released from Tobey Hospital.

Through interviews and investigation, it was determined that Johnson allegedly entered the home, kicked the victim in her back, and struck her in the back of the head with a hammer which knocked her unconscious. Johnson then allegedly poured a flammable liquid over the victim and lit the dwelling on fire. The woman reported that she regained consciousness and found herself alone inside the property and surrounded by smoke and flames. She then fled to a neighbor for assistance.
