Friday morning ground was broken on a project that will bring 100 senior apartments to Fall River.

The Fall River Knitting Mills building at 69 Alden Street has begun its transformation.

With the help of $1.8 million in permanent financing from The Massachusetts Housing Partnership and a total of $5.2 million in tax incentives and grants, Liberty Affordable Housing Inc. will transform the five story granite building into affordable senior apartments for people 62 and older. Once finished, the new housing complex will feature 74 one bedroom and 26 two bedroom apartments, with 16 of the units set aside for extremely low-income seniors at or below 30 percent of area median income. Knitting Mills Apartments will also include a senior center and health clinic.

Petersen Engineering is also working on the project.

The complex is expected to be completed around the spring of 2019.
