It is a Fall River institution for both the quality of food and the quality of customer service.

Regina and Kenny Mark will serve their last chow mein sandwiches at Mee Sum on Tuesday as they are set to begin a well-deserved retirement.

The Chinese American restaurant has been open for over 74 years serving the Southcoast and beyond with exceptional Chinese cuisine.

So good that Mee Sum is known far and wide.

Fall River native, restaurant owner, chef, and former tv show host, Emeril Legasse featured Mee Sum and stated how much he loved the Chow Mein sandwiches. He even returned in April of this year for a visit.

In 2018, Thrillist ranked Mee Sum one of the top 25 Chinese restaurants in America.

CNN came to see Mee Sum on August 6th of 2019 for a story on the Chow Mein sandwich. With the story, the landmark restaurant decided to also raise money to help repair St. Anne’s Church by selling over 1,500 Chow Mein sandwiches that raised over $10,000. CNN staff even chipped in to help.

That fundraiser, and others they have held like it, touches on why the Marks are known for more than their delicious food.

By all accounts, Kenny and Regina are good people. Customers who they served so well have become friends. They have given back to their community.

Regina has stated that she will miss the customers who have supported the business for so many years.

“It is very hard to let go of the work we love to do, and we thank all the people all these years who’ve been supporting our business.”

As much as the Marks will miss us, I think Fall River may miss Mee Sum even more.

As we all patiently wait to see who takes over 1819 South Main Street earlier next year, thank you Regina and Kenny. You have left our community in a better place than you found it.
