Investigators have determined what took place that caused the deaths of 4 Massachusetts family members.

At just after 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2024, the Wakefield New Hampshire Police Department responded to 2962 Province Lake Road in Wakefield for a welfare check after family members discovered they had not arrived for a holiday event. When officers arrived, they found multiple people deceased. Investigators from the New Hampshire State Fire Marshal’s Office were requested to respond to the scene to assist.

The victims were identified as Matthew Goldstein, 52, Lyla Goldstein, 54, Valerie Goldstein, 22, and Violet Goldstein, 19, all of Newton, Massachusetts.

The New Hampshire Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has determined the cause of death of Valerie Goldstein and Violet Goldstein was carbon monoxide poisoning. Their manner of death remains pending, and the cause and manner of death of Lyla Goldstein also remains pending. As previously released, the cause of death of Matthew Goldstein was carbon monoxide poisoning, and the manner is pending. The family was from Newton, Massachusetts.

While the investigation is continuing, investigators have determined the propane gas home heating system at 2962 Province Lake Road in Wakefield malfunctioned and its ventilation system was damaged as a result.

A GoFundMe fundraiser has been created for a memorial fund in honor of the family.

State Fire Marshal Toomey encourages all New Hampshire residents to perform routine maintenance of their heating systems and to ensure they have installed, maintained and properly working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
