Being a first responder is a difficult job and it’s even harder when you watch the untimely passing of your co-workers.

Marshfield Fire Chief Michael LaSelva has announced the unexpected passing of Marshfield Fire Captain William Shields in a touching tribute.

“Captain Shields dedicated his career to protecting and serving the Town of Marshfield and the people he cared so deeply about. His commitment to our community was evident throughout every chapter of his service. He began his career with the Marshfield Fire Department as a call firefighter and was appointed as a full-time firefighter in 2006. Through his hard work, dedication, and leadership, he was promoted to Lieutenant and later to Captain.

“Throughout his career, Captain Shields took on many important responsibilities within our department. He served as our Training Coordinator, helping prepare and develop the firefighters who serve our community, and he was the lead mechanic responsible for the maintenance and readiness of our fire department apparatus. He also served our residents as an EMT-Paramedic, providing compassionate and professional emergency medical care when people needed it most.

“Captain Shields was much more than the positions and titles he held. He was a dedicated public servant, a trusted colleague, and a member of the Marshfield community who devoted countless hours to keeping others safe. His knowledge, experience, willingness to help, and commitment to protecting and serving our town made a lasting impact on our department and on the lives of those he served.

“On behalf of the Marshfield Fire Department, I extend our deepest condolences to Captain Shields’ family, loved ones, friends, fellow firefighters, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him. During this incredibly difficult time, our thoughts and prayers are with everyone who is grieving his loss.

“Captain William Shields leaves behind a legacy of service, dedication, and sacrifice that will not be forgotten.

“Rest in peace, Captain William Shields, and thank you for your service to our community.”

The Professional Firefighters Of Massachusetts has created an online fundraiser for Shields’ family.

It has been a difficult few days for the firefighter brotherhood in Massachusetts as 3 have died due to mental health.
