Fugitive facing at least 19 charges after driving wrong way, crashing stolen car, tasing officer, K9 dog
A Rhode Island man was arrested Wednesday after he crashed the stolen vehicle he was driving into a wooded area then lead police on a foot pursuit through the woods and surrounding neighborhoods, injuring three officers.
According to West Bridgewater Police, at approximately 12:30 p.m., the West Bridgewater Police Department received complaints that a male operator appeared to be passing in and out of consciousness at the wheel of his vehicle.
Responding units observed a gray Toyota operating in and out of the travel lanes at the intersection of Manley and West Street. As officers attempted to pull the vehicle over, it sped away driving into oncoming traffic on the wrong side of the road, striking a vehicle as it attempted to elude Police.
While fleeing from police, the 30-year-old Jesse Marinaro of Providence lost control of the vehicle, crashed into the woods, then fled on foot into the wood line towards a neighboring condominium complex. Marinaro then entered the condominium complex and successfully broke into a home that was occupied at the time and was chased off by the homeowner.
While running from the condominium, police were able to catch up to Marinaro and attempted to bring him to the ground. A brief struggle ensued and both the officer and Marinaro fell to the ground. While struggling on the ground, Marinaro made several attempts to pull the officers Taser from his holster. In doing so, the suspect was able to deploy the officers Taser, striking both the officer and the suspect alike, in capacitating the officer for several seconds. Marinaro was able to gain control of the officer’s Taser and continue to flee. While running from police, Marinaro attempted to break into one of the responding police cruisers, however, he was unable to get into the locked vehicle. Marinaro then changed direction and ran into a wooded area between West Street and Crescent Streets.
Responding units set up a perimeter and were able to contain Marinaro into a small area as they deployed K9 Officer Flaherty and his K9 partner Fedor to search the area. After a brief search, officers were able to locate Marinaro in a back yard on Crescent Street. After refusing several attempts to comply and still armed with the officers Taser, K9 Fedor was deployed to assist in the apprehension. Marinaro, still armed with the Taser, attempted to fight with K9 Fedor and utilized the Taser to stun K9 Fedor repeatedly. Officers were then able to subdue Marinaro and take him into custody without further incident.
Two officers were treated at area hospitals for injuries and expect to have a full recovery. K9 Fedor fought off his injuries and is doing well with his police handler.
Marinaro was evaluated by West Bridgewater Fire Paramedics and was ultimately transported to an area hospital where he is still in police custody and under arrest.
Marinaro will be arraigned in Brockton District Court on Friday on the charges of Fugitive from Justice warrants (2), Outstanding default warrants (4), A&B on a Police Dog (2 Counts)
A&B on a Police Officer (2 Counts), A&B with a Dangerous Weapon, Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, Breaking and Entering in the Daytime, Resisting Arrest, Leaving the Scene of an accident, Failure to Stop for Police, Unlicensed operation of a Motor Vehicle, Receiving a Stolen Motor Vehicle, and Receiving Stolen Property.
