Freetown, Berkley, Lakeville, Dartmouth, Rochester, Westport fire departments battled flames, winds in blaze that left animals deceased
Several local fire departments battled flames and the elements to extinguish a blaze that killed animals.
According to the Freetown Fire Department, just before 5:00 p.m., a resident at 19 locust Street reported their barn was on fire.
A full department response was issued and Station 3 was staffed with the duty crew of 3.
While enroute, the officer of Engine 3 was advised that the police were reporting a large barn in the rear of the residence with heavy fire showing. The Lieutenant ordered a working fire assignment and additional tankers to respond based on this report.
Engine 3 arrived to find heavy fire conditions, the high winds were adding to the already difficult firefight.
Engine 3 and the first mutual aid engine from Berkley focused on protecting the residence from flying brands while attempting to control the flames in the barn.
Mutual aid was provided by Berkley, Lakeville, Dartmouth District 3, Rochester, Westport and Dighton provided station coverage. Dighton responded to several calls while FFD were tied up. Command requested the Freetown Hi-way backhoe to assist with overhaul.
All large animals escaped the barn, however several rabbits, ducks,and chickens perished.
All units cleared the scene at 10:20 p.m.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
