Free concerts, movies, exhibits, activities and more coming to Heritage State Park in August

Here is the programming schedule for August at Fall River Heritage State Park.

All programs are free and open to the public. The Visitor Center is located at 100 Davol Street in the Captain Thomas J. Hudner, Jr. Memorial Building. Free parking is available in the DCR parking lot at 5 Water Street in Fall River. An adult must accompany children. Reasonable accommodations are available upon request. Wheelchair accessible.

Exhibit, Films, and Community Gallery
Explore our permanent exhibit celebrating the cultural, ethnic, and industrial history of Fall River. Learn about the waterfalls that shaped the city, enabled its industries, and even gave it its name. Films and temporary exhibitions highlight stories of the city and community.

Relive the summer joy of a visit to the region’s favorite amusement park. Bring back fun memories for the whole family. This program is suitable for all ages.

FILM: LINCOLN PARK REMEMBERED, 10:00 am, Visitor Center Theater

Enjoy this fun-filled ride into the past with vintage clips and footage from as early as 1920. Run-time 45 minutes.

FILM: THE FABRIC OF FALL RIVER 11:45 am, 1:45 pm, Visitor Center Theater
Explore Fall River’s rich past, from the First People through the cotton mill era, to the needle trades of the 1980s. For ages 8+ years. Film 34 minutes.

ORANGE BILLOWS, an Original Sculpture Celebrating the Textile Traditions of Fall River. Visitor Center
“Orange Billows” connects the rich history of the textile industry of Fall River with the natural setting of the harbor.

STORYWALK® SERIES Dawn to Dusk on the Boardwalk
Enjoy a story, fresh air and exercise! Join HSP on the grounds for Peace Train, a delightful book based on the inspirational song by Cat Stevens, illustrated by Peter H. Reynolds. This moving and joyous book invites us all to sing out for peace. The StoryWalk ® Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT and developed in collaboration with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library. Story Walk ® a registered service mark owned by Ms. Ferguson.

FRIDAYS & SUNDAYS

CRABBING THE QUEQUECHAN, 1:30-2:30 pm, on the Footbridge.
Join as we go exploring for blue crabs. HSP will bring the supplies needed for this catch-and-release. Learn a little about the animals that call the Quequechan River. Meet on Kaplan Footbridge in front of Visitor Center. For all ages. Rain cancels. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS AND EVENTS

AUGUST 1 DCR FREE FAMILY FLICK: Puss in Boots: Last Wish, at dusk, on the Meadow

Bring a blanket, chairs, bug spray, and picnic supper to enjoy this free family film under the stars in the Park. All ages. Runtime: 1:40. Moves indoors in inclement weather.

AUGUST 5TH & 15TH

NATURE IN THE CITY SERIES, TURTLE TALK, meets in the Visitor Center Lobby Saturday August 5th, 11:00am-12:00 noon
Join a Taunton River Watershed volunteer for an inside talk on Taunton River turtles. Meet a Terrapin turtle at the end of the program! All ages welcome.

NATURE PAST AND PRESENT, Tuesday August 15th, 10:00am-11:00am
Join a Taunton River Watershed volunteer for a walk along the boardwalk to learn of the water changes and wildlife of river in the past and the natural history today. Easy walk, accessible. All ages welcome.

AUGUST 20 PLEIN AIR ART IN THE PARK 12:00Noon—3:00 pm. Pollinator Garden/Picnic Area

AUGUST 26 CONCERT: ST. ANNE’S CREDIT UNION’S 28TH ANNUAL SUMMER CONCERT – Starring Petty Larceny, 4:30 pm.

Experience New England’s #1 Tom Petty tribute band at this FREE Summer Concert, starring Petty Larceny. Don’t miss this fun day of music, food trucks, and giveaways. Refreshments will be available for purchase from food trucks. Giveaways begin at 4 p.m.

AUGUST 1-31 EXHIBIT: FIRE AND THUNDER: Massachusetts Blacks in the Civil War, Visitor Center Lobby Gallery

The story of how the Black community of Massachusetts fought the Civil War — in the press, on the streets, from the pulpit, the podium, and the battlefield. This is a companion exhibit to THE PATH TO INTEGRATION: African Americans in the Armed Forces of Massachusetts, From the Revolution, to the Civil War, to the World Wars and beyond. Exhibits on loan courtesy the Commonwealth Museum.
