A Massachusetts fire fighter has died in the line of duty.

The Scituate Fire Department and Scituate Fire Fighters Local 1464 have announced the Line of Duty Death of firefighter John D. Reidy III after a courageous battle with Occupational Cancer.

Reidy was appointed to the Department on July 18, 1994 and was most recently assigned to Engine 4.

John received the Fire Fighter of the Year award from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in 2003 for rescuing a swimmer 100 yards off of Minot Beach.

John was a fixture on the department’s Dive Team and was a well-respected Senior Man to newer department members.

SFD asks that you keep John and his family in your prayers.

Services have yet to be announced.

According to State House News Service, after almost a year of studying how “forever chemicals” touch nearly all aspects of life in Massachusetts, last month, the PFAS Interagency Task Force released its final report with recommendations that the state regulates cancer-causing PFAS chemicals that have been known to be found in fire fighter gear and foams.
