Fire destroys Swansea home leaving seven residents and several pets displaced
A local home was destroyed by fire on Friday afternoon.
According to the Swansea Fire Department, at just after 3:45 p.m. the Swansea Fire Department was notified of a possible structure fire at 9 Houlton Street. Personnel reported heavy smoke was visible enroute to the fire scene.
Upon arrival of fire crews, heavy fire conditions were observed in the raised ranch style home.
Chief Hajder commanded the fire and brought four Swansea engines, Ladder 1, and Rescue 1 to the scene. An additional engine from Somerset Fire Department was brought to the scene and Swansea Ambulance Corps responded to standby at the fire.
The first line from Engine 1 went into service to cool an overheating propane cylinder in the rear of the home which was venting gas and impinging on the home. Two more 1 ¾’ handlines were sent into the home and knocked down the bulk of the fire on the top floor and attic.
Swansea FD reported that there was extensive damage throughout the home.
Seven residents and several pets were displaced. There were no injuries reported.
The American Red Cross is assisting the residents.
Rehoboth Fire Department Along with Warren Fire Department provided station coverage during the incident.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
