Fire Department: 40 to 50 vehicles destroyed, homes damaged in Bristol County blaze

ATTLEBORO — Chief Scott Lachance reports that the Attleboro Fire Department, with assistance from the Pawtucket, R.I., Fire Department, successfully extinguished a two-alarm fire at an auto salvage operation on Friday night.

Crews first received a call around 5:20 p.m. Friday about campers on the property at Sterry Street Towing, 24 Rice St., that were on fire. The fire quickly spread from the campers, which were at the rear of the company’s property, toward a collection of vehicles in the salvage yard. About 40 to 50 vehicles were destroyed.

The fire also spread to a wood fence, which straddles the Massachusetts-Rhode Island state line, alongside the property and damaged multiple wood sheds in Pawtucket.

There was heat and smoke damage to the Sterry Street Towing building. No homes were significantly damaged, and there were no reported injuries.

Crews had the fire under control by around 6:45 p.m. Wind and fuel were complicating factors.

Attleboro Fire provided three engines and a ladder. Mutual aid partners covered Attleboro’s stations.

The fire remains under investigation by the Attleboro Fire Department.
