Family and friends are mourning the loss of two men who died in a drowning incident on Friday.

Police were called to Phelps Pond in West Greenwich at approximately 8:30 p.m. for two unresponsive swimmers.

Upon arrival, first responders found two men under 8 feet of water.

According to WJAR, a West Greenwich police officer quickly pulled both men out of the water. Crews began performing CPR to try and save them.

The two men, 20-year-old Joshua Richards and 20-year-old Tylon Brooks, both of Providence, were sent to Kent Hospital in addition to another person who jumped into the water after them.

According to a GoFundMe fundraiser for Richards’ funeral expenses, his brother stated that Richards died while trying to save Brooks.

“At only 20 years old, he was so full of life and talent, from a star athlete to an amazing artist, with a smile that lit up every room he walked in.”
