Joson Sanon, the 6-foot-5 shooting guard from Fall River, Massachusetts played his first regular season game for his new team Monday after previously entering the NCAA transfer portal.
Sanon selected West Virginia University in the beginning of May and came off the bench to contribute to a blowout win against the Niagara Purple Eagles, 91-46.
He was sharp from deep going 3-6 from 3-point land and finishing with 9 points and 5 rebounds.
West Virginia had an up-and-down 2025-26 season in the Big 12, failing to make the NCAA Tournament but finished strong winning the inaugural College Basketball Crown. Under coach Ross Hodge, WVU finished 21-14 overall, overcoming inconsistent shooting during the regular season to win the post-season title.
The 20-year-old Sanon appeared in all 37 games for the St. John’s Red Storm in the 2025–26 season, averaging 7.9 points and 2.4 rebounds per game while often coming off the bench. He shot 33.8% from the field and 33.6% from three-point range.
Sanon began his college career at Arizona State as a five-star prospect. In his freshman season he played in 27 games (nine starts), averaging 11.9 points and 3.4 rebounds per game while shooting 42.2% from the field and 36.9% from three. He logged significant minutes (28.3 per game) and showed strong scoring ability as a highly touted recruit.
A product of B.M.C. Durfee High School and later Vermont Academy, Sanon was a consensus top-25 national recruit in the class of 2024. He transferred to St. John’s ahead of the 2025–26 season to play for Hall of Fame coach Rick Pitino and helped the Red Storm reach the NCAA Tournament.
