The Steering Committee of the Community Preservation Coalition has announced that they voted last week to appoint John Brandt to a CPA Community Representative position on the board. John’s candidacy for the position was strongly endorsed by all members of the Nominating Committee, as well as by the Steering Committee as a whole.

“The Community Preservation Coalition (the Coalition) plays a leading role in working with the state and local governments and key partner organizations to help preserve Massachusetts communities’ unique character. The Coalition was formed in the 1990s with the goal of achieving passage of the Community Preservation Act. This goal was met in 2000, when then-governor Paul Cellucci signed this statewide enabling legislation into law. The Coalition was founded by a number of nonprofit organizations, including: The Trust for Public Land and The Conservation Campaign (now the TPL Action Fund), Citizens’ Housing and Planning Association, Massachusetts Affordable Housing Alliance, Mass Audubon, and Preservation Massachusetts. The Trustees joined the Coalition’s Steering Committee in 2007. That same year, the Steering Committee was expanded to include representatives from CPA communities in the Commonwealth.

The Coalition helps municipalities understand, adopt and implement CPA, and advocates for CPA at the state level, thereby advancing smart growth and sustainable development in communities across Massachusetts.”

John is one of the three newly appointed representatives who will be joining the Community Preservation Coalition for a 3-year term, running from March 2023- March 2026. John will be joining five existing community representatives for a total of 8 representatives from CPA communities.

The Steering Committee meets quarterly throughout the year, with meetings typically scheduled for the second Tuesday of March, June, September, and December.

John Brandt has been a member of the Fall River Community Preservation Committee since its inception 10 years ago. He represents the CPC through the Conservation Commission. John has represented the committee as a member, moved up to Vice-Chair and is currently serving as Chair of the committee. “Sitting on these two committees is something close to my heart, with my love for the outdoors as a hiker and my desire to preserve our open space and protect our wetlands through these two committees.” “I also support and encourage the need for historic preservation as I’ve shown through my commitment to preserve and restore the home, I live in which was built in 1843 as a firehouse.”
