Fall River woman sentenced to prison after fatal traffic altercation
BROCKTON – A Fall River woman was sentenced to serve in state prison after she was found guilty of fatally stabbing another motorist, Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz has announced.
On December 8, 2023, after deliberating two days, a Plymouth County jury found 36-year-old Jacqueline Mendes guilty of one count each of Manslaughter and Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon.
On Thursday, Mendes was sentenced to serve 10-12 years. The Commonwealth requested that Mendes serve 13-17 years.
At approximately 3:45 p.m. on June 28, 2019, Brockton Police received multiple 911 calls reporting a stabbing in the vicinity of 276 Belmont Street and at the intersection of Grafton Street.
Upon arrival, police and emergency medical personnel located a female victim bleeding profusely and suffering from a stab wound to the right side of her neck. She was treated on scene and transported to Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton before she was transferred by helicopter to Boston Medical Center (BMC) for treatment. The victim was pronounced dead at BMC on Saturday afternoon and has been identified as 41-year-old Jennifer Landry of Brockton.
Approximately 15 minutes after the incident, Mendes arrived at Brockton Police Department and reported to police that she was in an altercation with a motorist in the Belmont Street area, and there may have been a stabbing involved.
As part of their investigation, State Police Detectives assigned to the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office and Brockton Police developed information that a traffic confrontation ensued between Mendes and Landry prior to the stabbing. Mendes allegedly stabbed Landry with a knife and re-entered her vehicle and fled the scene.
According to the Assistant District Attorney, a witness saw the two women wrestling and throwing punches at each other before Mendes returned to her car, saying, “I’ve got something for you, b****.”
Mendes attorney described Landry as the initial aggressor in the fight between the two, stating that the victim exited her vehicle after Mendes honked at her for repeatedly breaking in front of her.
Mendes had pleaded not guilty claiming self-defense and stating Landry had a knife which was found closed at the scene.

Heat of the moment… Now two lives are destroyed. Not to mention the many who have lost a loved one. When will we stop to take a breath and think before we react?

I know this story well because it was my wife’s life that was taken. This bitch took a beautiful kind soul without any hesitation because my wife didn’t take her shit. My wife accidentally cut this woman off and then her and her friend started chasing my wife and the passenger got out of the car twice and banged on my wife’s car trying to scare my wife. Even though my wife was all heart she didn’t take shit from anyone especially when she felt she was right and in this case she was right. My wife tried to get away from these 2 clowns but at the last stop sign couldn’t take it any more and exited the car and lost her life for trying to stick up for herself. So now after my son and I lose his mom and my wife the only justice we get is that this woman can b out in possibly 5 and a half years. The judge said she will still b young enough to contribute to society. From what I hear in the street about this woman is that will never happen. I’ve heard she is just trouble period. It’s crazy to think u can take a life and only get 10 to 12 years. Not to mention my wife’s mother after this gave up on life because she couldn’t live without her best friend and youngest daughter and ended up passing away this past June. This women ruined my whole family and all me and my son have now is memories and broken hearts. Jennifer Landry got screwed bad!!!! I will Miss u mama always
