Fall River vigil for International Overdose Awareness Month canceled, other activities in the works

The Annual vigil in Fall River for International Overdose Awareness Month has been canceled.

Laurie Godwin, from Recover Fall River, stated that logistics concerning COVID-19 measures made it a hurdle that could not be overcome.

“Regrettably, we have concluded that it would be logistically impossible to ensure social distancing at a large event. However, we remain committed to recognizing International Overdose Awareness Month, and are working on several activities that will enable compliance with guidance regarding COVID-19, while providing the opportunity for family and community engagement.”

One of those activities is a flag raising ceremony that will take place this coming Monday, August 3rd, at 1:30pm in conjunction with Recover Fall River, Gone Too Soon, and the City of Fall River.

Mayor Paul Coogan will join with families and advocates in raising the purple flag outside of Fall River Government Center. Along with the flag raising, the City will be lighting Government Center purple. Both gestures are to acknowledge the significant impact overdoses have had on the community, encourage residents to become more aware of issues related to addiction and overdose, and to support the lives of those that have been affected.

The event will consist of a brief message from Mayor Coogan, a message from an impacted family member, a prayer for the community, and the flag raising itself.

According to Recover Fall River, opioid overdose remains the leading cause of death for Americans under the age of 50, and Fall River is among the Massachusetts cities most affected.
