Fall River Police investigating after dog shot after reportedly charging at officer
A dog was shot, and an officer injured after an incident in Fall River on Friday.
According to Det. Sergeant Moses Pereira, just after 5:45 p.m., Fall River Police responded to a multi-family residence on South Main Street near the Fall River and Tiverton line.
A police response had been requested to check the welfare of an adult female who had not been heard from for several weeks.
Pereira stated that at the residence, an officer encountered a Pit Bull which reportedly charged at the officer. The officer attempted to retreat and create distance moving away from the animal but was unable to get away. In order to protect himself, the officer shot at the dog, striking it. The shooting occurred outside of the property.
Animal Control reportedly responded to the scene and brought the Pit Bull for medical treatment. At last check, the dog is expected to recover from the gunshot wound.
The officer involved suffered an ankle injury in his attempts to avoid the Pit Bull. He was treated at Charlton Memorial Hospital and has since been released.
Pereira said that the use of force by the officer will be examined by police department supervisors to ensure that the actions taken align with department policy.
There were no other injuries. No other information was released as the investigation continues.
