Fall River Police Department creating community engagement and fun for families through social media
Fall River Police recently began a social media offering that provides some fun for families in the community.
You may have seen recent Facebook posts by the FRPD where “Buddy” the bear leaves his coin behind hoping children will find it and win a prize. The idea came from Det. Sergeant and Public Information Officer Moses Pereira with the goal to create some community engagement and provide a fun activity for families.
“It looks like he will be “losing his coin” one more time before Christmas,” said Pereira. “Each time Buddy “loses his coin”, I provide periodic clues until it has been located. Thus far, two coins have been hidden, both of which were located by two young ladies from Fall River. The prize for finding the coin is a $50 Visa gift card. The gift cards were purchased with private funds contributed by members of the Department and are a great way to provide a little extra support for the holidays.”
Pereira states that he has had the idea for some time, and it has the support of Chief Paul Gauvin.
“The idea behind Buddy is a spinoff of something I’ve been considering for a while. Chief Gauvin has been a huge supporter of this initiative.”
According to Pereira, the popularity of Buddy will make him a staple for the remainder of the holiday season with similar campaigns likely on the horizon.
“I expect that in the future there will be additional games/activities, to build on the success of the Buddy campaign. Similar activities have been conducted by other Departments in the area and I believe it is a positive way to interact with members of the community.”
The Department plans to also use Facebook to share some of the positive actions taking place in the city.
“Social media is a powerful tool that can be leveraged to share our activities and celebrate the good things that are happening in our community, such as Coats 4 vets, L.E.A.F toy drive, the Holiday Children’s Parade, acts of kindness and support towards our Department, and of course Buddy.”

This is great, but given the FRPD’s track record of the last few years, I would rather it concentrate on having a truly independent agency investigate the department.
For every conviction, there are a lot of coverups, and some officers have cost Fall River hundreds of thousands of dollars in out-of-court settlements but remain on the job or in a quiet taxpayer-funded retirement.
Community building is great, it’s just too early for that to be a priority.
