The Fall River Police Department is putting a dent in off-road vehicles on city streets and is looking for the public’s help to further curb the problem.

In a statement Tuesday, FRPD announced that they have been cracking down on the illegal operation of ATV’s and dirt bikes and warned that as the temps continue to rise, the frequency with which these riders will be seen will also increase.

“These individuals are operating these vehicles illegally and creating a hazardous situation for motorists and pedestrians as they often ride in large groups, ignore traffic signals, and perform dangerous maneuvers which can lead to serious injury.”

The department asks that if you have any information about where the vehicles are being stored and/or the individuals illegally operating the vehicles, to call their tip line at 508-672-TIPS (8477).

“These individuals who are operating illegally create hazardous situations putting everyone at risk. Working together we can enhance our ability to provide a safer environment for everyone.”

On Sunday, officers assigned to the Special Operations Division were out on Sunday with the nice weather conducting motor vehicle enforcement on Plymouth Avenue.

Officers were able to arrest the operator of an off-road vehicle who police say was driving the ATV illegally and unsafely on City Streets.

With the arrest of the adult operator, the ATV was towed from the street and impounded.

Also on Sunday, Fall River Police arrested two after a stolen moped led to a foot pursuit.

The issue has been a major complaint among residents the last several years. This provides the opportunity for those taking issue with off-road vehicles on city streets to do something about it.

Police are doing absolutely nothing to crack down. Every weekend the illegal dirt bikes and four-wheelers hang out in front of a business on Pleasant Street smoking weed. Then they race down Pleasant Street, take a left on Eastern Ave, cross into wrong-way traffic, cut through Lafayette Park, down Mason Street, and do it again.

The FRPD in the area is usually hanging out in the old CHF parking lot window to window, talking or eating at Pizza Time, where the racers go zooming by.

I’ve seen the d**** drive in the wrong lane into oncoming traffic, on the sidewalk where people are walking and right past police. Nothing is done.
