Fall River firefighters extinguish Wednesday afternoon fire, likely cause released
Fall River Firefighters extinguished a Wednesday afternoon fire that likely could have been prevented.
Just after 3:00 p.m., a call came into dispatch for smoke showing from a multi-family home located at 850 Second Street.
According to District Fire Chief Michael Clark, when responders arrived, they encountered smoke on the third floor of the structure which extended into the attic.
Damage occurred to both inside the home and to the exterior near a fire escape.
Firefighters chased the smoke and flames through walls as a significant amount of overhaul was required.
FRFD had the fire fully extinguished in approximately an hour.
Clark stated that a cigarette was discovered near the fire escape on the third floor and that the cigarette had probably been there for some time.
Significant damage from water and smoke in addition to the fire itself equaled approximately $80,000.
According to the Red Cross, 5 adults and 2 children have been displaced and they were in the process of rendering aid to them.
No injuries were reported.
