FALL RIVER, MA – Crews battled wind, flames, and difficult conditions in a multiple alarm blaze in Fall River Saturday.

According to Fire Chief Jeffrey Bacon, the Fall River Fire Department responded to a significant structure fire this afternoon at the old Silvia School on Hartwell Street. The fire was first reported shortly before 3:00 p.m. by passing motorists on Route 195.

Upon arrival, fire crews encountered heavy fire conditions and initiated an aggressive interior attack to knock down the flames. After approximately 30 to 40 minutes, all personnel were ordered to evacuate the building due to concerns about the structural integrity of the structure. Firefighters transitioned to a defensive operation, continuing to battle the fire from the exterior.

Crews will remain on scene throughout the night to ensure the fire is fully extinguished and to monitor for any potential flare-ups. Due to the hazardous conditions inside the structure, fire investigators were unable to enter the building. They will return in the morning to begin a thorough investigation into the origin and cause of the fire.

The Fall River Fire Department thanked the community for their cooperation and urges residents to avoid the area while crews continue their work. Additional updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
