Despite COVID-19, Fall River Firefighters are still trying to “Fill the Boot”

Fall River Firefighters will still be trying to “Fill the Boot” despite COVID-19.

Fall River Fire L1314 members are typically at intersections throughout the city collecting money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association by drivers tossing money into a firefighter’s boot. With the coronavirus pandemic, it was felt that the normal protocol just wouldn’t be safe. So Union President Jason Burns and crew have improvised.

“Due to the COVID-19 pandemic we were not able to do our normal annual fill the boot fundraiser. We are conducting a virtual Fill the Boot fundraiser.”

Through the fundraiser, the Fall River community has stepped up in a big way.

“Since we began participating locally in MDA’s Fill the Boot campaign in 2010, with [the community’s] help, we have been able to raise over $270,000 dollars for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Twice leading ALL locals in New England in addition to New York and New Jersey. Really incredible support!!”

Burns knows that during the pandemic, times have been tough for many.

“We know times are tough for families right now, but if you can afford it, any donations would be greatly appreciated.”

Burns hopes that if you can’t make a donation that you can spread the word about their fundraising campaign.

For more than 65 years, “Fill the Boot” has been helping people diagnosed with muscular dystrophy.
