Department remembers active-duty Massachusetts police officer who died this week

It has been announced that an active-duty Massachusetts police officer died on Monday.

According to the Department, Lieutenant Detective Henry Staines was assigned to District C-6 Detectives. Lieutenant Detective Staines was appointed to the Boston Police Department on June 26, 1996, as a Student Officer. After graduating from the Police Academy, he served as a Probationary Officer and Permanent Police Officer assigned to District C-6, the C-6 DCU Squad, District B-3 and District E-13. He was rated Detective in 2007 and assigned to B-2 Detectives. He was promoted to Sergeant in 2010 and assigned to District E-18, District E-13, District B-2 and the Anti-Corruption Division. He was rated Sergeant Detective in 2017. In 2018 he was assigned to the Office of the Police Commissioner as the Commander of the Dignitary Protection Unit. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 2020 and assigned to District B-2 and the Internal Affairs Division, where he was rated Lieutenant Detective. He was then assigned to BIS/Office of the Chief and C-6 Detectives.

Lieutenant Detective Staines received numerous commendations for his dedicated service during his career. There are a number of internal commendations from Commanders noting efforts surrounding arrests made, firearms recovered and drugs seized and a particular commander acknowledgement of the efforts of B-2 to reduce crime in the community. In addition, letters from the Transit, Randolph and Pittsburg Police Chiefs were received noting arrests for a shooting and a bank robbery and for representing the Department at an Officer’s funeral. Other commendations from the community shared actions that were simple acts of kindness and assistance.

The announcement stated that Lieutenant Detective Staines was highly regarded by those he worked with, his supervisors and all who knew him, both within the Department and by those we serve.

A cause of death was not released.
