Police arrested a local man Thursday after a fiery crash in Westport.

According to Detective Robert Rebello, at approximately 9:59 a.m., officers with the Westport Police Department responded to a single motor vehicle crash in the area of 159 Old Bedford Road. Multiple calls were received regarding the crash where a vehicle had left the roadway, struck a utility pole and came to rest in the middle of the roadway.

As a result of the crash, airbags were deployed and witnesses reported the lone operator had suffered injuries. Kaylana Amorin of Westport removed the injured operator from the vehicle prior to police arriving on scene because the vehicle had caught fire.

Once on scene, Westport Police officers reported two Troopers with the Massachusetts State Police were tending to the male operator lying in the roadway. The operator, later identified as 36 year old Robert Moura of 790 Old Fall River Road, Dartmouth, was breathing, but unconscious. Officers on scene observed Moura’s behavior and determined he had overdosed. They administered Narcan, a nasal spray officially known as Naloxone used first for the emergency treatment of a known or suspected opioid overdose, and he regained consciousness. Moura was then transported to Charlton Memorial Hospital by Westport Fire Department personnel.

Officers attempted to extinguish the car fire prior to the Westport Fire Department’s arrival but were unsuccessful as the vehicle caught fire again after their fire extinguishers were emptied. When they arrived, the Westport Fire Department continued to fight the fire and were able to contain and successfully extinguish the fire.

Moura is facing multiple charges including Speeding, Operation of a Motor Vehicle While Under the Influence of Drugs and Negligent Operation of a Motor Vehicle.
