Cyclist rushed to trauma center after serious crash during Pan-Mass Challenge
A cyclist was seriously injured Saturday afternoon while participating in the Pan-Mass Challenge.
According to the Lakeville Fire Department, at approximately 12:20 p.m., firefighters were alerted to a bicycle accident on Howland Road. At the time of the call, a crew was committed to a previous medical emergency. A recall was transmitted bringing off-duty and on-call firefighters to the response.
Responders were forced to navigate against the flow of bicycle traffic, support vehicles, and other vehicles operating in the area to reach the injured rider.
Crews arrived on the scene to find an adult male patient being treated by event medical staff and a private ambulance crew.
Due to the seriousness of the injuries, the Lakeville paramedic firefighters took over care of the patient.
While on the scene of the first accident, a second group of bicycles crashed close to the first accident scene. The involved riders were able to continue on.
The injured rider from the first crash was transported to St Lukes’s Hospital, the nearest trauma center.
