TAUNTON— Police Chief Edward Walsh and Fire Chief Steven Lavigne report that the Taunton Police and Fire Departments responded to a serious crash late Tuesday night.

At 10:11 p.m., Taunton Police and Fire received reports of a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Highland and Winthrop Streets.

Upon arrival, first responders observed that a tanker truck and a sedan had crashed.

The driver of the sedan, the sole occupant, a 36-year-old Taunton man, was transported by ambulance to a Rhode Island hospital to be treated for his injuries.

The operator of the tanker truck, a 36-year-old Southbridge man did not report any injuries.

The initial investigation indicates that the tanker truck was traveling on Winthrop Street (Route 44) when the sedan entered the intersection from Highland Street and collided with the tanker truck.

A portion of Winthrop Street was closed while the scene was still active. The road reopened at approximately 3:00 a.m.

The crash remains under investigation by the Taunton Police Accident Reconstruction Team and the Massachusetts State Police Detectives Unit assigned to the Bristol County District Attorney’s office.
