Could you let Walmart come into your home and put groceries in your fridge? They are hoping so

Are you ready to let a stranger pick out your groceries and walk into your home and place them in your kitchen? Walmart is hoping so.

While Walmart is on track to offer Grocery Pickup from 3,100 stores and same-day Grocery Delivery from 1,600 stores by year-end, the company is preparing to go even further.

According to Marc Lore, President and CEO, Walmart eCommerce U.S., Walmart InHome Delivery is a new service designed to help customers save time. The service does so by delivering groceries even when customers can’t be home. Here’s how it works:

Customers place a grocery order and then select InHome Delivery and a delivery day at checkout. Customers can then go about their days while a Walmart associate takes care of their grocery shopping for them – from food aisle to fridge. At the time of delivery, associates will use smart entry technology and a proprietary, wearable camera to access the customer’s home – allowing customers to control access into their homes and giving them the ability to watch the deliveries remotely.

According to the company, your groceries will be delivered by a trained and vetted Walmart associate, who has been with a local store for at least a year. Walmart states that these associates will also be trained to find the freshest grocery items and organize the most efficient refrigerator.

While the service will at first begin in Kansas City, Missouri; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and Vero Beach, Florida this fall, if all goes well, the service could soon be coming to a Walmart near you. The company has yet to reveal how much the service will cost.

The question is, will consumers feel comfortable enough to pay the extra price to have someone they don’t know fill their fridge? It remains to be seen.
